Lebanon Emergency Appeal

Even before the explosion the people of Lebanon were living in terrible circumstances. An increase in inflation almost collapsed the economy and left a large percentage of the population unable to afford basic food items.

At least 150 people are currently known to have died and over 5,000 people have been left injured from the blasts. There are still victims trapped under the rubble and footage shared on social media showed the moment a building exploded, sending an enormous shockwave across the city that shattered windows, shook buildings and destroyed homes. An estimated 300,000 people have been left homeless.

The explosion and shockwaves were reportedly heard and felt as far away as Cyprus, more than 200km away. The destruction of Beirut’s port will devastate the country further as it relies heavily on imports for its essential supplies.

Hospitals in Beirut are overrun with wounded people

Lebanon’s economy was already on the brink of collapse from the effects of the ongoing financial crisis and the strain of the coronavirus lockdown. Hospitals in Beirut are now overrun with wounded people, with some being referred to Tripoli, 50 miles to the north of Beirut, for treatment.

The destruction of Beirut’s port will devastate the country further as it relies heavily on imports for its essential supplies.

Our emergency response

Rise Support are working on the ground in Lebanon to provide emergency aid to those affected by the explosion. Our UK team will be visiting the site in due course to deliver your aid directly to those in need. Whilst in Lebanon, we will be monitoring the situation to evaluate how we can support the people of Lebanon over the long term.

However, our initial focus is to provide immediate relief by distributing food, water and medical aid to those who are injured and lost their homes.

Rise Support has already started its response – we are looking at providing drinking water, food and medical aid for the people who have lost their homes.

A man asked the Messenger (PBUH) what the good qualities of Islam are. He replied,

To feed (others) and to greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know.”

Fighting malnutrition

The 1.5 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon are facing extreme food insecurity. Even before the virus spread, 73% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon were living below the poverty line, and for those living in temporary shelters and camps, that figure soars – only 4% of Syrian refugees in Beqaa have secure access to regular food.

Ten years of hunger. With the ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon, and in the aftermath of the Beirut blast, a staggering 94% of Syrian refugees are food insecure and urgently need help to access food. Help us to change this by providing regular food parcels this Ramadan and beyond.

Never going home

The continuing violence in Syria means that these families can’t go home. Those who ordinarily work are restricted to low-paid daily labour and have been pushed out of work due to the pandemic.

Your support is urgently needed to help keep Syrians fed as they struggle to stay nourished this Ramadan.
